I can’t contain my excitement any longer! After years of dreaming about my own dedicated photography space and taking a few months to get it all set up, the studio is finally complete! The studio is located in our home basement in Hanover (about 20 minutes from downtown and 30 minutes from Short Pump and Midlothian). Yes, I literally walk downstairs to go to work, it’s pretty awesome! Basically my commute is now 5 seconds. For about 7 years I have been lugging a trunkload of gear to people’s houses all over the Richmond area and now it just stays set up and ready for the next baby. The whole collection of gear and props are at my fingertips. (*Note: I do still travel for lifestyle newborn sessions. I only bring a few wraps.) My husband (bless his heart) is glad it’s all out of his garage! You enter the studio through my backdoor (two thumbs up for a separate entrance so you don’t see my zoo of a house upstairs.) The space is about 900′ which allows me to have several different shooting areas set up simultaneously. I have the wooden wall, large paper rolls, the love seat window area, and the bed.
I’m not afraid to admit that my OCD is very apparent when you look at the wrap wall… hello ROYGBIV! I have a wide variety of hats, headbands, pants, and wraps in all sorts of colors for you to choose from.
There are several buckets, baskets, chairs, little beds, and wagons that suit ages up to 5 years. I might have an addiction to thrifting, but at least it’s a business expense.
The family area is where you will hang out and hopefully get some time to relax while I shoot. It’s stocked with snacks and drinks. There are some sample products to browse through while you wait. It’s also a great area for shooting families on the love seat or by the window (still pinching myself that we found a basement WITH windows in our beloved neighborhood!) For the siblings I have a teepee filled with toys to help keep them occupied during the session. One good thing about my having both a girl and boy of my own is that I have been collecting clothing for both genders as they grow. I have an assortment of dresses for girls and mommies, hats, flower crowns, you know I love pants with suspenders, Christmas jammies and even a superhero cape that I would love for you to use.
There’s even a changing table complete with diapers, wipes, hairbrushes in case your new mommy brain left something at home. Here is the beanbag area where all of the sleepy, naked shots are taken. Note my secret weapon – the space heater! I spy some pee pads too.
Here is the white bed that I use for family shots (and heck, you can even take a nap!) Another perk is the full bathroom conveniently located in the studio. great for washing cake off babies that just smashed it! Pets are also welcome, they are part of the family afterall. It’s closed off from the rest of the house so my big old guy won’t bother them. The studio is mainly for newborn sessions but I love doing milestones throughout their first year too, including cake smashes. I will also host some themed sessions here throughout the year (Valentines, Snuggle sessions, Headshots, and Christmas minis…) Thank you for tagging along for the tour. Please come see it in person sometime soon! Bring me all the babies!
